A crowd of approximately 1,000 spectators attended the Madison Chamber of Commerce’s first annual Bed Race on Sunday, May 18 near the Town Green. Accompanied by music from the School of Rock, onlookers perused the “Showcase of Beds” prior to the race, while judges examined the entries.
Members of the Daniel Hand High School marching band led a “Parade of Beds” prior to the 1:00 start time as spectators lined up on Meetinghouse Lane. The beds competed in single bed heats down the bed route, which measured approximately 100 yards. The themes of many of the beds ranged from a “Ride the Wave” ocean-inspired bed (complete with mermaid), constructed by Raveis Real Estate, to a Flintstone family style “BEDrock”-mobile by Coldwell Banker to the Independence 500″ by Vista Vocational, to fire engine-style beds by both Madison Hose Company No. 1 and the North Madison Volunteer Fire Company.
Bed Race Chairmen Ed Pellegrino and John Mathers were thrilled with the turnout and look forward to making this fun event an annual tradition in town. “It far exceeded our wildest expectations” said Chamber Executive Director Eileen Banisch. “We’re already working on next year’s event.”
A total of 20 teams participated in the event, each with a captain, along with four “pushers,” one rider and up to two “pit crew” members.
Team Madison Hose Company No. 1 was lead by team captain Ally McNeely, and comprised of “pit crew” members Greg Dowler, Taylor Gerard, and Richard Volmer. “Race crew” members Tom D’Annolfo, Michael Kuehler, Nina Lunn, Mike Sampson, and Connor Stevens who raced to a 2nd place finish, after Madison Beach Hotel who was awarded 1st place.
The fire engine style bed, which Madison Hose Company No. 1 used to compete in the race, was built by the hose company’s junior members.
